South Africans Des Sacco, Chris Grainger, Jean Grainger, Trevor Wilkinson, John van Heeswijk and Craig van der Wath returned to South Africa after a successful sortee to the recent World Masters Games played in Turin, Italy with a haul of 2 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze medals.
In the 70/75 category Des Sacco lost to Gerald Poulter 11-13 11-9 3-11 6-11 to capture silver while Jean Grainger beat Claire Bryars 11-7 10-12 9-11 11-7 11-6 in a titanic battle to take bronze in the women’s 60/65/70 group.
Jean’s husband, Chris was also involved in a nail biting finish, when he lost to Brian Cook 7-11 13-11 11-8 7-11 10-12 to win silver in the 60/65 group. Trevor Wilkinson pocketed the first gold when he defeated fellow South Africa John van Heeswyk 11-3 11-1 12-10 in the men’s 55 section. Craig van der Wath, who won the gold at the World Masters Championships in Birmingham in July 2012 : then took gold at the British Masters Open, continued on his winning way outplaying his opponents all in straight games in his round robin group to collect South Africa’s second gold.
