Matthew Boote, Thomas Jordaan, Luke McFarland, Mark Gouweloos and James Gouweloos kicked off their very busy itinerary of the 2016/17 Knights Tour with a match against the Coolhurst Lawn Tennis and Squash Racket Club in Crouch End, London on Wednesday 30th November.
26 year old Matthew Boote, the captain is from Durban, and a Land Surveyor by profession. Although starting squash at age 11 along with a number of other sports, it was only when he was at University that he concentrated more on squash after being selected for development team. Luke McFarland , 22 years old, went to school in Pietermaritzburg before moving to Port Elizabeth. He returned to Pietermaritzburg where he is studying 3rd year Financial Accounting. Luke has represented squash, cricket and lifesaving at provincial level and participates in the Fish and Duzi canoe marathons.
Raised in Uitenhage, Thomas Jordaan represented Eastern Province in the junior ranks before moving to Stellenbosch University representing the University 4 times at USSA. Thomas is currently at UCT reading for his Masters in Chem Eng and has played twice at USSA for UCT. At Jarvis he played once for EP and twice for SACD. Mark Gouweloos, an Honours student in Business Management, worked previously for 5 years in the corporate world. He also comes from Pietermaritzburg where he is coaching at Wykeham Collegiate. From 13 years old of age he represented Kwazulu Natal at the Schools age-group interprovincials and for the past 9 years has played for Midlands at Jarvis.
The youngest member of the team at 21 is James Gouweloos – born and bred in Pietermaritzburg, he has followed in his cousins’ (Justin, Mick and Mark) footsteps, playing first in the schools age-group interprovincials for Kwazulu Natal and then for Midlands at Jarvis. James is currently studying for a B. Com degree in marketing and also coaching squash for pocket money.
This is the 28th tour since the late Dick Hawkey and Kendal Jarvis launched the concept in the early 1960’s.
