Sheldon Erasmus (SACD) and Jonathan Letlake each survived tough five setters before making their way to the second round of the S A Nationals Qualifying tournament being played at the Wanderers Club, Johannesburg on Saturday.
Erasmus lost the first game 11-6 to Derek van der Merwe of Northerns before winning the second and third games 11-8 11-3 and hold two match points at 10-9 in the fourth game. Van der Merwe fought back to level the points at 10-all eventually taking the game at 13-11. Points seesawed until 8-all in the fifth when Erasmus played the tighter squash to notch the next 3 points and the match at 11-8.
In the longest match of the day between Letlake and Middleton, Letlake won the first game 12-10 only to lose the second by the same margin. Middleton took the third game at 11-7 but determined retrieving by Letlake saw him level the match at 2 games all when he won the fourth 11-9 . Letlake held 2 match points in the decider clinching the match on his third match point at 12-10 .
The second qualifying round starts at the Wanderers Club at 10h00 on Sunday .
