The Northerns Open Squash Championships got off to a quiet start at the Pretoria Country Club courts on Monday evening with the final women’s qualifying round and the first round of the men’s championships being played.
The Landman twins, Elania nd Lume,students at UJ , took their allotted places in the main draw after beating Karen Schultz and Hannah Shipley
respectively in straight games.
Elani Landman now clashes with the fourth seed Milnay Louw of Western Province while Lume meets top seeded Salma Hany Ahmed of Egypt.
Former national champion Farrah Sterne had a five game tussle with Sachika Ingale (Pak) before moving through to play 8th seeded Julia
Lecoq(France).
Lauren Siddall, who collected the Londt Park Open title last week in Port Elizabeth, was the fourth qualifier when she disposed of Robyn Baptiste in
straight games and now faces her opponent from last week, Cheyna Tucker
There were no surprises in the men’s event although 6th seeded Anthony Graham (Eng) was forced to retire after only 7 points with an injured ankle
giving Piedro Schweertman (Ned) a place in the second round where he will now meet England’s Oliver Pett.
The semi-finals will be played on Thursday 10th April with the finals on Friday 11th April at the Pretoria Country Club.
