Connecting with Jennifer Sawyer, National Manager at Squash South Africa about 2023’s most anticipated Growthpoint SA Nationals and Juniors taking place at the Victoria Wharf Shopping Centre in Cape Town.
The Open takes place from 10-12 August and the Junior (U15 U17 U19) event is from 17-20 August.
Let’s recap, what are the Growthpoint SA Nationals and Juniors all about?
The Growthpoint SA Nationals Seniors and Juniors are to showcase our top talent in the country. Not only this, but it brings squash out to the public in the form of the Nationals being held in the V&A Waterfront Shopping Centre, on the all glass court. Great exposure to Squash South Africa and to our players.
How important are these tournaments?
Squash South Africa gets the opportunity to livestream the matches to the whole of the squash community in South Africa and overseas. Also Growthpoint Properties get excellent media coverage with their logo on all matches and brings a marketing excellence to Growthpoint Properties.
What impact has Growthpoint and the other sponsors made on the tournament and the federation?
Growthpoint Properties has made this tournament possible with their sponsorship and especially to have eight different Squash hubs around South Africa and then culminating into the final at the V&A Waterfront. With the support of The City of Cape Town, this is a wonderful marketing tool for them, showcasing that local government supports Squash South Africa and are proud to be partnering with us. Southern Sun, Dunlop and BLK are also involved with Squash SA as official partners. We also have local partners and suppliers who are slowly becoming mainstay of Squash events such as Beares Group, Wimpy, Eurolux, Caroline Fine Flowers, Heineken, Ster-Kinekor, aQuelle and the V&A Waterfront.
Any highlights, memorable moments from last year or previous years?
The tournament has gone from strength to strength. Watching the development (CSI for Growthpoint Properties) children on the glass court having fun and learning, and what could happen if you continued with the game of Squash. The U15, U17 and U19 faces whilst being professional photographed, having interviews, having referees and commentators for their games, is a whole new ball game for them. The excitement on each sections winner including the seniors. For this we’re just looking forward to another successful Growthpoint SA Nationals.
How can people get involved in the sport?
They can contact Squash South Africa info@squashsa.co.za or whichever province they reside in can contact their provincial squash offices.
