Unseeded Piedro Schweertman (Netherlands) caused the upset in the Central Gauteng Open Men’s Squash Championships being played at the Parkview Centre, Johannesburg when he outplayed 5th seeded Thoboki Mohohlo in 4 games in the second round on Tuesday evening.
In last week’s Northerns Open, Schweertman was a surprise semi-finalist but his steady all round play against Mohohlo showed clearly that he is determined to regain his world top 100 ranking, which he held in 2010 and 2011.
South African interest now focuses on Michael Wood, who having ousted second seeded Tayyab Aslam (Pakistan) in the first round, outplayed Devon Hendrickse in four games to set up a quarterfinal clash with 8th seeded Arthur Moineau (France). 24 year old Moineau was involved in a five game tussle with Mike Tootill of Gauteng.
Top seeded Austrian Aqeel Rehman and Northerns champion, Tom Ford, the third seed from England, took their allotteed places in the quarterfinals defeating Hesham Aly (Egy) and Zuko Kubukeli (RSA) respectively.
Egyptians dominate the women’s quarterfinaks with Salma Ahmed , Salma Nassar, Nadine Shahin, and Nouran el Torkey in the line-up. They are joined by Julia Lecoq(France) Milnay Louw , Cheyna Tucker, both South African and second seeded Kylie Lindsay (Nzl).
In the longest women’s match of the evening Louw was pushed to five games by former S A National champions Farrah Sterne who has recovered from an ankle injury. Games seesawed until two games all when Louw mamaged to edge through the decider 11-6.
