Thursday: Semi-final line-up: Men: Pett vs Schweertman, Ford vs Wood: Women: Ahmed vs Shahin, Louw vs Lindsay.
In last evening’s quarterfinals played at the Parkview Centre, Johannesburg, 3rd seeded Tom Ford (Eng) fought a tough five game battle against unseeded Ameed Fareed (Pak), edging through 11-9 in the decider, to become the only surviving seed in the semi-finals of the Central Gauteng Open Squash Championships.
In the semi finals to be played this (Thursday) evening, Ford now meets unseeded South African Michael Wood. Wood had a fairly comfortable win against Arthur Moineau (Fra) the 8th seed in four games.
In the other semi-final Oliver Pett (Eng) meets Piedro Schweertman (Ned). Pett completely disregarded the seedings by disposing of top seed Aqeel Rehman (Aut) for the loss of only 10 points while Schweertman defeated 4th seeded Muhammed Yousaf (Pak) also in 3 games – a reversal of their last week’s clash in Pretoria which Yousaf had claimed in 4 games.
The womens semi-finals sees two Egyptians meeting – top seed Salma Ahmed and 6th seed Nadine Shahin, last week’s Northern’s Open winner, while South Africa’s Milnay Louw, the third seed plays second seed, Kylie Lindsay (Nzl).
In last evening’s quarterfinals Ahmed accounted for Julia Lecoq, the 7th seed from France. Shahin took four games to defeat fellow countryman Salma Nasser.
Louw was involved in a tense 5 game struggle with Nouran el Torky eventually clinching victory on her second match point at 12-10 in the fifth game with Lindsay registering a straight game win over Cheyna Tucker of South Africa.
