Day 2 of the main draw for the Mens Balwin Assore Gauteng Open saw some of the top seeds falling out of the event.
Essam number 1 seed had no trouble beating seasoned masters player van der Wath 3-0. “He was just too fast onto the ball and I was under pressure the whole time,” said van der Wath.
Ahmed Effat Ashoush is definitely on a winning streak and ousted Andrew Martin in a very tough 5 setter. “I am very happy to be through to the next round,” stated Ashoush. “I am pleased with my performance so far and have won 2 very hard matches in the fifth. I am really looking forward to the match tomorrow against the youngster Dylan Groenewald from SA who had a very good win against Mark”.
Groenewald showed Broekman his athletic ability by doing the splits and picking up some amazing shots. The high altitude eventually saw Broekman gasping for breath in the 4th but Groenewald kept getting back the ball and eventually out ran the young Englishman.
The woman started their campaign today with all top seeds getting through to the next round. Luma Landman one of the well-known twins in South Africa did not have it all her way and had to keep a steady head and focus hard to beat Alexa Pienaaar 11/8 in the fifth game.
Matches on Wednesday 20 April start at 16:00 at Parkview Squash Centre.
