The biggest doubles tournament in South Africa – The SA Masters Interprovincial Doubles championships – will be hosted by Easterns Squash this weekend at various venues – Boksburg Squash Club, Benoni Country Club, Benoni Lake, Sunward Park, Kempton Park Country Club and Kempton Park Squash Club.
Former national players Craig van der Wath and Angie Clifton Parks (Easterns) top the mixed seedings followed by Trevor Wilkinson/Farrah Sterne (Northerns), Neil Nesbitt/Tara Ralphs (Zimbabwe) and Paul Atkinson/Jennifer Fox (Central Gauteng).
Clifton Parks features again in the women’s doubles with Michelle Groenewald with strong opposition in the form of Linda Shannon/Desiree Edwards (CG), and Pat Kekewich/Samantha Herbert (KZN).
Van der Wath/Gary Plumstead (E) should do battle with Mike Tootill/Paul Atkinson (CG) in the men’s doubles.
392 players will be seen in action in the various pools with the mixed doubles taking place on Thursday until midday Friday followed by the men’s and women’s on Friday afternoon and all day Saturday.
Doubles is a discipline in the Commonwealth Games. South Africa has the largest number of competitors in doubles in the world although it is gaining popularity in Australia, New Zealand and England.
